COUNTY KERRY

KERRY'S WILD AND RUGGED COASTLINE
IS TYPIFIED AT DINGLE BAY.

As Western Europe turns to gaze on its sunset in the evenings all eyes unwittingly look towards County Kerry. For here in the farthest west the sun dwells longer. Where its distance from the Greenwich Mean Time meridian adds another time zone in the evenings.

Time and light may be the core of Einstein's Theory of Relativity but nothing so stringent lives here. Kerry sets its own time and lives out its life on a stage of awesome scenery. If its moods could be predicted the Great Light Experience would probably be the county's main attraction. For those who come here return home with a greater understanding of the importance of their daily gift.

To stand on one of the great peninsulas that boldy stretch into the Atlantic Ocean and to experience the solitude in the face of the ever-changing moods of the light is one of Kerry's great experiences. The sharp morning sun exposing the detail of majestic mountains against deep blue skies. To feel your heart beat a little faster as ominous dark clouds descend menacingly over the tops of those mountains. Or to gaze out to the next peninsula across the sea and watch celestial spotlights, miles in the distance, beam through a moody grey ceiling and glint in silver streaks on the water. You can stand with mist and cloud swirling around you and look across the sea to the neighbouring land bathed in sunshine. This is the magic of Kerry.

The stage is now set for you to enjoy one of the greatest natural shows on earth and so understand better the relaxed, personable attitude of Kerry's inhabitants. During the day they will nod and wave to you as you pass and will "spend the time of day with you". In the evening their sense of fun comes out and friendly banter takes off throughout the many pubs in the county. Crowded into tiny bars, some looking the same as they did years ago, you can enjoy the spirit of the people — and that of the landlord. Add to this heady cocktail a foot-tapping Irish reel and you will sleep soundly that night in readiness for another dramatic show of nature that awaits you the next day.
