THE
SOUTH COAST

THE UNIQUE AND INDIVIDUAL COASTAL
VILLAGE OF BALLYHACK.
On
the road south out of Wexford (towards many of the areas attractive
beaches) is Johnstown Castle home to the Irish Agricultural
Museum (admission charge). The castle is actually a revivalist mansion
within an extensive parkland estate and the museum itself covers all
the different aspects of rural Ireland including farm machinery, domestic
life, transportation and workshops.
Rosslare (Ros Láir) (not the harbour) enjoys several
miles of beautiful strand with the attractive golf links of Rosslare
club (18) running alongside a further nine holes have been added
just to the north, giving 27 in all.
Rosslare Harbour to the south is a main port of entry for cars
to Ireland with ferries from Wales and France. The facilities around
are mainly geared to this and there is a seasonal tourist information
office (June-Aug). Tel (053) 33622.
To the west is Kilmore Quay (Cé na Cille Móire),
an unusual fishing community, which is approached down a long road lined
with picturesque little whitewashed cottages with neat and well trimmed
thatches complete with billowing colour from masses of summer window
boxes.
The road finishes at a small roundabout in front of a modern harbour,
home to the local fleet and for a substantial marina with yachts and
motor vessels. There are boat trips to the uninhabited Saltee Islands,
just offshore and there are regular sea angling boat parties that leave
the harbour.
